FILMS
I decided to become a film director when I was 15 years old. I went to the Komsomolsky cinema in Oryol with my mum and a group of friends from drama club. Back then every main town of each region had cinemas with the same name – Rodina (motherland), Pobeda (victory), Komsomolsky (Komsomol), Oktyabr (October), and so on. This provincial cinema was unexpectedly showing Tarkovsky's Nostalgia. I fell asleep at around the first twenty minutes and woke up near the end and thought:
  • I REALLY LIKE THIS FILM, TARKOVSKY IS A GENIUS AND I WANT TO BE A FILM DIRECTOR.
Then at 16 I passed the creative selection stage for VGIK, the Gerasimov
Institute of Cinematography, but I was not allowed to sit the exam, of course, as I was still a school child. I then studied for four years at the Institute of Culture in Oryol in the Directing Faculty under Valery Ivanovich Simonenko and in 1994 I tried to get into VGIK again. That year I didn't get in, but I did in 1995. I only studied there for a year, but during that time I met all the people who I would later work with: artists, cinematographers and actors. To begin with we made music videos and ads, then we each found our way to film.
